Several weeks ago, Dallas-Fort Worth Fertility Associates posted a blog applauding reality TV stars Bill and Giuliana Rancic for their decision to publicly share their struggle with infertility. The Rancics are now expecting a baby through the use of a gestational surrogate.

This news comes after the well-known couple (E! News and Fashion Police co-host Giuliana Rancic is married to former Apprentice winner Bill Rancic) experienced a miscarriage and canceled IVF cycle, which led to a breast cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy.

Their struggle was aired on TV. What about regular people — like you — who may not have endless resources and a publicity team? Your story likely includes the same heartbreaking setbacks. The couples we see at Dallas-Fort Worth Fertility Associates experience their own “reality” of pain and frustration.

Will most who face infertility achieve a happy ending?

First of all, as reproductive endocrinologists, we have to reiterate that infertility is a disease. Like any complicated medical condition, there is no guarantee of a cure. Add to that the financial burden and emotional stress of fertility treatment and it’s clear that this journey is not for the feint of heart. However, 80 to 85 percent of those who partner with a specialist will resolve infertility.

Not every person will take the same path to achieve his or her goal of becoming a parent, but everyone deserves a chance, regardless of financial means.

That’s why Dallas-Fort Worth Fertility Associates supports the Family Act of 2011, a bill to create a tax credit for the out-of-pocket costs associated with infertility medical treatment.

The Rancics sacrificed their privacy to champion the cause for infertility awareness. You don’t have to go on television, or even Facebook, to stand up for yourself or others experiencing the trauma of infertility. Contact your state representatives to let them know you support this bill, or log on to Resolve to find out about the grassroots efforts to get the word out.

Like the Rancics, your journey to parenthood will also include obstacles to overcome and seemingly insurmountable challenges. While you pursue your dreams of becoming a parent, the doctors, nurses and staff at Dallas-Fort Worth Fertility Associates encourage you to make your voice heard.
