Uterine Polyp Treatment
How are Uterine Polyps Diagnosed and Treated?
There are various theories as to why removing uterine polyps might improve fertility. One theory is that the presence of polyps may reduce the blood flow to the endometrial lining, which may interfere with the implantation of the embryo in the endometrial lining. Furthermore, there is evidence that the presence of polyps may cause miscarriages.
Your Dallas-Fort Worth Fertility Associates physician will take a history and perform an exam. If there are symptoms, tests will be performed. If you do not have symptoms, uterine polyps may be discovered during infertility testing. Some of the tests used to diagnose uterine polyps include:
- Transvaginal Ultrasound
- Diagnostic Hysteroscopy
How Are Uterine Polyps Treated?
If you have small uterine polyps that are not causing any symptoms, your Dallas-Fort Worth Fertility Associates physician may recommend a “wait and see” approach, monitoring the polyps’ growth. Sometimes the polyps may be treated with hormonal medications (progestins and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists) that could shrink uterine polyps. This is usually only a temporary, short-term solution.
Hysteroscopy Is Used to Both Diagnose and Treat Uterine Polyps
Hysteroscopy is used to diagnose and/or treat uterine polyps. During this procedure, your fertility specialist inserts a long, thin tube with a lighted telescope (hysteroscope) through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. During hysteroscopy, the physician will examine the inside of your uterus, often removing any polyps he or she finds.
Hysteroscopy is an outpatient procedure that usually takes about one hour.
